Today, May 6, 2010 is the National Day of Prayer, a time that encourages Americans to take some time out from their normal routines and spend it praying for our nation, the United States of America. Thankfully, despite controversies (unbelievable to me) about this designated day in our country, the U.S. government is allowing it to continue.
This event, created in 1952 and signed into law by President Harry Truman, was amended in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan to state that the day would be observed on the first Thursday in May. Organizers cite the day of prayer's origins to 1775 when the Continental Congress encouraged the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation.
I encourage you to find a time to pray along with millions of other Americans. You could take a few minutes on a break during work, or spend an hour or more in your home or with a small group,. Ask the Lord to bless and protect our nation and its Christian values, direct and counsel our leaders and give them wisdom to lead our country well.
1Timothy 2:1-4
First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
