Cross Stitch Gift : Bookmark

Here is a cross stitched bookmark that I made for our sweet Chinese scholar when she returned home... I actually made a second one similar for me to keep to remember her by.

One of my sons gave me a laminator as a Christmas gift and this was its inaugural project.  Works GREAT.

The verse on the back in Mandarin Chinese reads:

Philippians 1:3-4
I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you...

Seasons of Life ... Time to Cross Stitch

I used to do cross stitch when my children were very young... before our homeschooling days.  Now that our youngest is about to move out of the house for college [bittersweet to me]  I've picked it back up again.

How do you like these two cards I made last week?

I also tried my hand(s) at quilling... something I'd only done once before marriage, before kids...  It was quite easy to do.  Saving these pieces to add embellishments to cards at a later time.

Working with your hands can be a pleasurable way to spend some time, especially if doing something mundane like watching television in the evenings... handmade gifts are so cherished.  Give a little of yourself to someone else...

National Card Making Day 2013

Not sure how this "holiday" got started but I sure had fun making cards with 2 of my younger friends at a Stampin' Up party today!   I made 12 beautiful cards in a couple of hours.

Stampin' Up Card Making Party

I had a fun time this past weekend for a few hours creating these beautiful cards  with Stampin' Up products with a small group of women.  I had made a few note cards several years ago but this time, I made Christmas cards... some easy, one of them very detailed.  The teacher was the mother of a young friend from church.  Her daughter was my personal "coach".   All of the pre-cut pieces, equipment and frills  for twelve cards were provided for a reasonable fee ($18.00,  $1.50 per card).   What a pleasant morning.  I went on a whim and was glad that I did.  Not being particularly crafty, I was delighted with these beautiful results.

I'll have to be on the lookout for Stampin' Up products when I am out buying inventory.  I have a few in my Ebay store at this time.

Frugal Wedding Bridal Shower Gift

It's such a joy to attend showers--baby and/or bridal.  I like to purchase things from the registry of the bride or mom-to-be, then I know I have spent my $$ on something that is really wanted and/or needed.  Many brides nowadays register at Bed, Bath and Beyond.  When I receive these coupons in the mail, see them in the newspaper or Entertainment Club books, I cut them out and save them in a ziplock bag.

The BB&B store near us accepts as many coupons as you have with you whether the expiration date has passed or not.  A huge bonus is the FREE gift wrapping they do for you at the store when something from the bridal registry is purchased, complete with a little gift tag.

In addition to the wrapped gift, I take a white doily and make it into an envelope.  I fill it with a dozen or so of these BB&B coupons for the bride to use, saving them LOTS of $$ when they shop after the wedding.   Here is a quick tutorial .  I use staples and/or glue to seal the envelope or dress it up with a pretty sticker to close.  It's very simple to make and looks pretty on the wrapped gift.

This little add-on to the gift is always a surprise to receive and is a "traditional" item for me to give.

SHARING:  Sometimes when I am at the cash register at BB&B, there is someone in front or behind me that forgot their coupons.  You should see their smiles when I give them one of mine!  So, don't toss those coupons.  Bless someone with them.

TIP:  The $5 off coupon is only valid on purchases of $15 or more and that's for the entire purchase, not just the cost of one item.

Handmade Gifts

1Thessalonians 4:11

...and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and attend to your own business and work with your hands...

I absolutely love for my children and close friends to make me gifts for birthdays, Christmas, etc. I have saved a few of my children's handmade items over the years as well as special items that friends have made for me. As my children have gotten older, these types of gifts are fewer and far between. For my birthday this year I had asked my college-aged son who loves to work with his hands to draw something for me instead of buying a gift. He actually did both but I was so delighted when he gave me this lovely card and 3-dimensional glass/wood piece of art that he designed and built. He finished it yesterday while he was here visiting. I have it setting on my piano and continue to be touched by the time and effort that went into this project.

Handmade gifts are cherished far longer than any store-bought item. I encourage you (and myself) to start working with your hands again to create something beautiful for someone you love.

RECIPE: Kale Soup

Kale comes in such large packages. I don't really like it as well raw as cooked and  I had a LOT to use up. Found this recipe for kale ...
