Movie Review: The Help

This past weekend I went out to lunch  with two girlfriends and afterwards, saw the new movie The Help.  What an excellent movie.   I highly recommend it to you.  It is currently in its third week of being #1 at the box office.

I grew up in segregated Augusta, Georgia, during the 1960s and was in the third grade when the storyline ends.   Many of the sights and sounds as shown in the movie of that era were familiar to me.  Our family employed two different maids over a period of six years when I was young and I do not ever recall either of them ever being treated disrespectfully.  They did not "raise" my brother and me but mainly did the housework and cooked dinner 2x a week for us.  Many families  we knew employed "help".  This movie has made me wonder what their lives at home were really like and makes me a bit sad.  I did not know any different being so young, and the idea that they might not have been happy working as maids never occurred to me.   My mother grew up in Augusta in the 1930s and was raised by a "black mammy" as they called her, who lived with the family.  She and her five siblings truly did love her as much or more than their own mother.  I'm sure that the thought that she might not be happy in her work never occurred to her either.

We moved from Augusta to Orlando (my dad was hired for the Disney project)  in the summer of 1970, the summer after a news-making racial riot occurred in Augusta.  I remember that night well since by then I was in the 9th grade.   I honestly never knew why the riot occurred until today when I searched on Google to see what caused it.  It was a shameful time in our nation's history.

I have not read this novel but many of my friends have and say that it is well written.  I hope to read it later this year. I see from the author's website that she was raised in Jackson, Mississippi, where the story takes place and wondered if the book was autobiographical in nature.  HERE  are some of her comments on growing up in Jackson in the 1960s.

Regardless of the setting [Jackson, Mississippi, during the civil rights movement], the movie is a story about women's friendships--good and bad--about perseverance in the midst of struggles and even danger, and about taking a stand and doing the right thing.

There are some hilarious moments, some thought-provoking scenes, and definitely a few tear-jerker scenes, so be sure to take your tissues...and go with someone with whom you can discuss the movie with over coffee afterwards.  :)

This week's movie is  a classic Agatha Christie / Poirot mystery, Murder on the Orient Express,  and begins at 8:00 p.m.  Bring a blanket, a picnic or some snacks and enjoy a free movie  in the park.

One of our sons attended the previous movie and said there is free popcorn and lemonade.

First Ever Nationwide HOMESCHOOL DAY Movie Club

Homeschool Movie Club is spreading the word about  its first ever nationwide HomeschoolDay.  I have just become acquainted with this site which was new to me, but I had  heard of the movie previously from our science teacher who created the curriculum for it.   Sherri has also authored a Marine Biology textbook for Apologia.

For this club, homeschoolers are encouraged  to form groups to attend a movie together on this particular day.  Be sure to register with the Homeschool Movie Club at THIS LINK.  Periodically other movies will be selected for groups to attend together.  By joining you have the opportunity to download the curriculum for each movie, receive freebies and other resources and maybe even attend a free early screening of the movie.

Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Part 2 MIDNIGHT PREMIERE JULY 15, 2011

The saga has officially ended.  Unless you live on the moon you know exactly what I'm talking about--the final movie  of  the Harry Potter series premiered last night.  In a previous post I told about my very first midnight premiere for Part 1 back in November.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, part 2,  was well done, staying with the book's details for the most part, and tying up all the loose ends.  If you haven't read the books or seen the previous movies,  you might not realize what all the loose ends were though.   Good triumphs over evil but at extreme sacrifice for many.

After a quick run to StarBucks for coffee, I attended this premiere with one of my sons (this was his Mother's Day gift to me) and several of his friends, about a group of 20+.

Before the movie the theatre played a flashback short of the three child actors and how they have grown up over the last 10 years. Here is A LINK to literally watch them grow.

Some people were dressed in costumes...

Most came as themselves, like we did. :)  I again wore my Hogwarts pin, a souvenir from our Universal Studios / WWofHP outing last year, and carried a Hogwarts scarf that I bought at our church rummage sale last month [selling this on Ebay now]. Unlike last year's premiere in the winter, this was a WARM evening.

A fun night but be sure to take some tissues...enough said about that.

If you're wondering if you and/or your children should see this film or any others in the series, or read the books, here are good reviews  on this movie and the book from Focus on the Family's Plugged In entertainment website for you.   Don't be afraid of these books/movies since they are so much of our popular culture but be informed and DISCUSS them with your children and friends.  It's a fantasy world with lots of magic definitely, but also one of enduring friendship and fighting for what is important.  There are also accurate summaries of all the books on SparkNotes  if you prefer to not tackle seven 800+ page books so late in the summer.

Graciousness (A Spoonful of Sugar) When Mistakes Are Made

I was cleaning out some shelves this morning and found a few more books to list on Amazon and Ebay.  I regularly weed through our bookshelves-- we have them in just about every room of our home.   I found a book that I had intended to either PaperBack Swap or sell.  It's funny how just the sight of a book can bring back a memory.

The movie Julie and  Julia came out a couple of years ago.  I had not gotten around to seeing it after it had been out a few months.  This  book that was given to me on my birthday that year by two dear friends who really wanted me to see the movie.

I finally saw it, thoroughly LOVED it and  highly recommend it.  You'll laugh and cry, but mostly laugh.    I do NOT recommend the book however.

I sat down one evening and picked up this thoughtful gift that my friends had given me.   I thought since I enjoyed the movie so much that I would probably enjoy the book even more.  I'm sure that's what they were thinking when they gave it to me.   It's usually that way with films. The books are almost always better.  Well, not in this case.  I got about 2 chapters into the book and it was WAY too inappropriate [language and situations mostly] for me to read and enjoy.  I was shocked and I knew that my friends would be also.   I didn't want to make them feel bad for having given me the book but I thought I'd better head them off before they gave it to someone else so I gently told them what was in it.  They were so sorry  and they were SO glad that I clued them in before they gave a copy to someone else who might not be as understanding.  We all had a good laugh over it and what might have occurred with similar subsequent gifts to others.

Morals of story:
  • Don't assume the movies  you enjoy are as good as the books OR vice versa.
  • Always think the best of people when something doesn't seem quite right (I knew they would never have given me this book had they known what was in it.)
  • Speak up when someone needs to know some information even though it may be awkward.
  • Laughing and humor helps almost any situation.  :)

Look through some of the books on your bookshelves. Do any of them hold any special memories for you?  I may write more on this since I love reading--all different types of books.  I prefer mostly non-fiction but will read fiction if it's highly recommended.  How about you?

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Opening Night Premiere

I attended my first ever midnight movie premiere showing.   The film we saw:  Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows (Part 1), also referred to as HP7.    My younger son took me as his birthday gift this year (I know, my birthday was about a month ago, but this was surely worth waiting for and a fun time!)  We went with a group of nine students and friends and had a great time.    Thank you, Daniel, for sharing this adventure with me.  :)   I wore Gryffindor colors and my Hogwarts pin from our WWofHP outing last month.

Others we saw were more dressed in costume...

9:00 p.m.  First stop, Starbucks, for some hot coffee to start the evening. Everything was decorated there for Christmas already.  Be sure to get your BOGO there over the next few days!

9:30 p.m.  Arrived at the theatre and amazingly, got a space under a street light right in front of the theatre

9:45 p.m.  Other friends started arriving to join us.  Line now beginning to stretch around the building on both sides. Can't believe I didn't take a group shot!   :(

10:15 p.m.  They let us into the theatre.  Had to wait 1 hour 45 minutes for the movie previews (unfortunately) to begin.   It was kind of comical seeing all the iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches come out, basically all at once. I resisted taking mine out except to check the time.

12:06 a.m.   The movie PREVIEWS began.  I think the actual movie started about 12:20 a.m. or so.   2 1/2 hrs of excitement from the beginning on...

The movie stayed true to the  book pretty well except for  the film's addition of one brief "semi-skin" scene which could easily have been left out (parental discretion scene). No language that I recall, but some scenes are pretty intense for younger kids.  For a movie review by  Plugged In, go to THIS LINK

This was SO much fun.  Everyone in there was apparently an HP fan and was quiet at all the right times, cheered at all the right times and laughed at the right times TOGETHER.    I think most even shed a few tears at the right time (don't want to give too much away).    All in all, a very fun evening.  In bed about 3:30 a.m., paying for it today.  :)  I'm off for a nap now!

My younger son had read the books last summer and I read them this summer.  A very fun read.  I wouldn't be too overly concerned about "negative influences" on your older kids with these books.  It's definitely a fantasy story and thoroughly enjoyable.  Read them together or at least over the same time period to discuss.     If you haven't read the books and don't really have time to do so, check out the detailed summaries at Sparknotes.com.

Here are a few scenes from the movie for you.  The sequel and final movie in the series is scheduled for release in June 2011 and will be in 3D.

These three kids have sure grown up over the last 10 years...this photo is from the first movie released in 2001.

A thoroughly enjoyable, fun evening.  I'm sleeping in tomorrow though. :)

FAMILY & FRIENDS: Girls' Night Out

This week we had two fun weekday evenings with friends. Tuesday night our family watched Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves with another couple, their kids two other high school boys and a single woman. Last night I was invited to a girls' night out with two of my friends to watch Anne of Avonlea, one of my all-time favorite movies. I never read the Anne of Green Gables books until I had children of my own and just love the stories. My husband and son have watched (endured) this very long movie with me once, but I know they don't enjoy it nearly as much as I do. We ladies made a whole evening out of it while our husbands were at a meeting. We had pizza, salad, ice cream & cookies... very simple, but comforting and had fun just being together crying at the touching moments with each other and watching Anne finally decide that she loved Gilbert. :)

I encourage all women to spend some time with each other apart from your husbands and families occasionally. Our men were not meant to meet all of our needs, so why put that excessive pressure on them? Hospitality can be easy and it's so enjoyable to spend a quiet evening in someone's home rather than battle the crowds at the theater. We do splurge occasionally and attend a new film, but I much prefer a home setting to watch movies and visit. It's more affordable and lends itself to more conversation in the long-run. Good, quiet times...

RECIPE: Kale Soup

Kale comes in such large packages. I don't really like it as well raw as cooked and  I had a LOT to use up. Found this recipe for kale ...
