Christmas Carols and Songs We Love : Hark! the Herald Angels Sing

Note: I have several posts here related to Advent and Christmas. Just type ADVENT in the Search window above or click on the link to the right.

This is another of my favorite carols. Perhaps because when you sing all the verse you get the entire message of the Gospel in one song.  Cheerful and upbeat, it's one that you often hear during the holidays.

Hark the Herald Angels Sing first appeared in Hymns and Sacred Poems, 1739. It was written by Charles Wesley (1707-1788), writer of many significant hymns, and brother of the founder of the Methodist Church, John Wesley (1703-1791).

1. Hark! the Herald Angels sing,
Glory to the new-born King,
Peace on earth and mercy mild,
God and sinner reconcil'd.

Luke 2:9-14 And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people;  for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.  This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
Hark! the Herald Angels sing,
Glory to the new-born King.
2. Joyful all ye nations rise,
Join the triumph of the skies,
With the angelic host proclaim,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.

Luke 2:13-14  And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.”

3. Christ by highest Heaven ador'd,
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come,
Offspring of a Virgin's womb.

Is. 7:14 “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.

Matt. 1:23 “BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL,” which translated means, “GOD WITH US.”

4. Hail the Heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings,
Risen with healing in His wings.

John 1:4-5

In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

John 11:25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me shall live even if he dies,

5. Mild he lays His glory by,

Born that man no more may die,
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth.

John 10:27-28 “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;

and I give eternal life to them, and they shall never perish; and no one shall snatch them out of My hand.

1Pet. 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead...
